From Campus to Classroom: Social Science Education Students Implement Innovative Teaching Models at SMPN 1 Loksado

Loksado, May 6, 2025 – Students from the Social Science Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, conducted a three-day Integrated Field Practice from May 4 to 6, 2025. The activity took place in two villages in Loksado District, Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency: Loksado Village and Loklahung Village. This fieldwork served as a practicum for the integrated course titled “Integrated Field Practice in Loksado.”

One of the core activities was a teaching program carried out by the Education Team at SMPN 1 Loksado. A total of 20 students, divided into five groups of four, were assigned to facilitate Social Science learning in five different classrooms.

The materials delivered were based on Chapter 4 of the curriculum, including International Trade, Social Issues, Population Dynamics, and Cultural Diversity. The teaching session began at 08.00 WITA with an opening ceremony featuring the presentation of souvenirs and certificates of appreciation from the Study Program Coordinator and Social Science lecturers to the school principal, followed by a group photo session.

The main learning activities were held from 08.30 to 10.30 WITA. Student-teachers successfully created an interactive and engaging classroom atmosphere. The students of SMPN 1 Loksado showed enthusiasm and interest, especially due to the creative teaching media thoughtfully prepared by the university students. The activity concluded with the official handover of the instructional materials to the Social Science teacher as a form of sustainable contribution.

According to the participating students, this direct teaching experience provided valuable insight into real classroom dynamics. “We gained a deeper understanding of how teaching unfolds in schools while learning to adapt to students’ characteristics and actual classroom conditions,” said one of the participants.

The success of this program resulted from two months of intensive preparation. The students went through stages of group formation, content selection, brainstorming, teaching model planning, regular consultations with supervising lecturers, and the production and simulation of teaching media. A micro-teaching session with the coordinating lecturer was also conducted to ensure readiness before entering the classroom.

The Education Team Coordinator expressed appreciation for the students’ dedication and the warm welcome from the school community. This activity was expected to serve not only as academic practice but also as a means of strengthening the relationship between the university and the local community through education.
