The undergraduate students of the Social Studies Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM), have actively engaged in the international SEA-Teacher Project or Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia.
This program, initiated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), aims to provide cross-border teaching experience for education students from Southeast Asian universities. Implemented through university partnerships with schools in host countries, participants have the opportunity to teach in classrooms with different cultures, curricula, and education systems from their own.
Social Studies Education students of FKIP ULM have taken part in several program batches. In the 5th Batch SEA-Teacher Project, Noor Meilina (Student ID: A1A615007), a 2015 cohort student, was the first delegate from the study program. She participated in the program from January 22 to February 18, 2018, at Saint Louis University, Baguio City, Philippines. During her placement, Noor Meilina taught Social Studies at both elementary and junior high school levels. All teaching activities were conducted in English and included classroom observation, lesson planning, teaching practice, and reflective discussions with local mentor teachers.
Another 2015 student, Hapijah (Student ID: A1A615014), continued the legacy in the 7th Batch SEA-Teacher Project. The program took place from January 7 to February 15, 2019, at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines. During her participation, she actively engaged in classroom teaching at a partner school under the university’s network. Her tasks included direct instruction, teaching method discussions with mentors, adaptation to the local educational system, and participation in professional development activities.
The SEA-Teacher program has significantly contributed to the enhancement of teaching competencies, cross-cultural communication, and multicultural awareness — all of which are crucial in the context of 21st-century education. The involvement of Social Studies Education students in this initiative reflects FKIP ULM’s strong commitment to internationalization and to preparing globally competent future educators.
