Lecturers and Students Conduct Environmental Education Program to Strengthen Ecological Awareness in Peatland Communities
A team of lecturers and students from Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) conducted a Community Service Program entitled “Environmental Social Education to Build Ecological Awareness in Peatland Communities” on Friday, December 13, 2025.
The activity took place in Kampung Baru Village, RT 04, Landasan Ulin Utara Subdistrict, and involved approximately 25 local residents, 15 university students, and several ULM lecturers.
The educational program focused on enhancing public understanding of the importance of protecting peatland ecosystems, the role of communities in environmental conservation, and the social and environmental impacts of peatland degradation. Through this initiative, participants were encouraged to develop a stronger sense of responsibility toward sustainable environmental management.
One of the speakers, Syarifuddin, S.Pd., M.Pd, a lecturer of the Social Science Education Study Program at ULM, emphasized that the community service activity was designed as a sustainable program based on mutual commitment between the university and the local community.
“Kampung Baru Village has strong potential to be developed as a peatland learning center. The local community possesses valuable knowledge and experience in managing peatlands, which are often challenging to cultivate. This knowledge is important and worth sharing with a wider audience,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Head of RT 004 Kampung Baru Village, Sunardi, warmly welcomed the implementation of the program. He expressed his appreciation for the direct involvement of ULM lecturers and students in engaging with the community and sharing knowledge and practical experience.
According to him, the activity significantly contributed to increasing residents’ awareness of the importance of preserving peatland environments. He also noted that the program opens opportunities for Kampung Baru Village to be recognized as a learning village based on local wisdom, particularly in the sustainable management of peatland ecosystems.
Through this community service initiative, the ULM team hopes to foster long-term ecological awareness among the community. In the future, Kampung Baru Village is expected to develop into a center for learning and reference on peatland management, conservation, and sustainable utilization for various stakeholders and communities.
