BANJARMASIN — The Department of Social Science Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), officially opened the 11th Anniversary celebration with a general lecture titled “Multicultural Education and the Challenges of Democracy in the 21st Century” on Monday, September 8, 2025. The event took place at the General Building Lecture Theater, Student Activity Center, from 09:30 to 12:00 WITA.
The lecture was attended by 91 students from the 2024 and 2025 cohorts. The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean I of FKIP ULM for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Deasy Arisanty, S.Si., M.Sc., while the keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Nuansa Bayu Segara, M.Pd., a lecturer from Universitas Negeri Surabaya.
The participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the session. The material presented was considered highly relevant to the current social and political context, particularly in the aftermath of the nationwide demonstrations on August 28, 2025. One of the points that caught students’ attention was the data revealing that Banjarmasin is ranked among the top ten cities with the best quality of democracy in Indonesia.
According to Dr. Nuansa, multicultural education plays a vital role in equipping the younger generation with the ability to manage diversity amid the challenges of 21st-century democracy. It is essential in fostering tolerance, openness, and critical thinking skills among students.
This general lecture marked the official opening of the 11th Anniversary series of events for the Department of Social Science Education, FKIP ULM. The upcoming agenda will include cultural discussions and a national seminar involving both students and lecturers, further enriching academic and cultural insights.
