Creative Literacy Corner x Public Discussion: Building an Inclusive Reading Culture in Banjarmasin
Banjarmasin, Sunday, June 29, 2025 – The Student Association of Social Science Education (HIMA PIPS), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Lambung Mangkurat University, successfully organized an inspiring community event titled “Creative Literacy Corner x Public Discussion”. The event took place at Taman Kamboja, one of Banjarmasin’s most iconic public spaces, in collaboration with the local educational community GEMBEL (Gemar Belajar). This activity carried the theme “Creative Literacy Corner as a Conscious Effort to Promote Reading Interest”, aiming to build a more inclusive and sustainable literacy movement.
The literacy corner was designed as an open, informal, and welcoming space where the public could engage with books and knowledge. In a relaxed yet meaningful atmosphere, participants from various backgrounds were invited to read a curated collection of books and join in interactive discussions. Literacy was not only presented as a reading activity but also as a medium for exchanging ideas and expanding intellectual horizons.
The discussion featured two dynamic speakers:
Ahmad Aditya, representing the GEMBEL Community of Banjarmasin
Abdul Ghoni, President of HIMA PIPS FKIP ULM for the 2025/2026 period
Both speakers emphasized the vital role of literacy in shaping a critical, informed, and knowledge-driven society. They pointed out that initiatives like the Literacy Corner are a practical embodiment of community-based education and a bridge connecting academic institutions with the public sphere.
This event also served as a platform to strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions and local communities. Students played an active role not only as participants but also as initiators of impactful learning spaces beyond the campus. The enthusiastic participation of local residents highlighted that literacy can flourish through grassroots efforts that are simple yet meaningful.
The organizing committee expressed deep gratitude to all parties who supported the success of this event. They hope that the Creative Literacy Corner will continue as a long-term initiative, expanding its reach and fostering a consistent, inclusive, and dynamic literacy movement across Banjarmasin and beyond.
