Social Science Education Students Encourage Residents of Desa Anjir Serapat Muara to Wisely Manage Used Cooking Oil
Batola, December 13, 2025 – Students from the Social Science Education Department (Pendidikan IPS), Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) conducted the Bina Desa Socialization on the Impact of Used Cooking Oil (Minyak Jelantah) in Desa Anjir Serapat Muara, Barito Kuala Regency, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA). The program aims to raise public awareness of proper household waste management, particularly used cooking oil.
The initiative targeted local residents, especially members of the Family Welfare Program (PKK) women’s group, who play a strategic role in managing cooking oil at the household level.
During the socialization, participants gained an understanding of the negative health impacts of repeatedly using cooking oil and the environmental hazards of improper disposal.
M. Aditya Ramadhan, a student of Social Science Education, explained that repeated use of cooking oil increases the risk of degenerative diseases. He also emphasized that improper disposal of used cooking oil can contaminate soil and water sources around residential areas.
“This program aims to educate the community to use and manage cooking oil more wisely, ensuring it does not harm family health or the environment,” he stated.
The socialization was conducted interactively and participatively. The material was presented in simple language with examples closely related to the daily lives of villagers. This approach encouraged participants, particularly PKK women, to actively ask questions, engage in discussions, and share experiences related to cooking oil use in everyday cooking activities.
Participants’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the program. Questions ranged from identifying signs of unusable oil, proper storage of used cooking oil, to exploring ways to repurpose oil without polluting the environment.
In addition to addressing negative impacts, the program provided insights into the potential for processing used cooking oil into more valuable products, serving as an initial step toward community-based waste management.
Through the Bina Desa program, it is expected that the knowledge gained can be applied in daily life and shared with other villagers. The PKK women are encouraged to act as agents of change, educating their families and communities about responsible used cooking oil management.
This initiative marks a foundational step in fostering collective awareness among the residents of Desa Anjir Serapat Muara to adopt healthier lifestyles and show greater care for the environment.
