BANJARMASIN, September 8, 2025 – The Social Science Education Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) officially kicked off its 11th-anniversary celebration with a remarkable event: a public lecture titled “Multicultural Education and the Challenges of Democracy in the 21st Century.” This event was more than just a ceremony; it was a clear reflection of the department’s vision to produce graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also deeply attuned to national and social issues.
Held at the General Lecture Theater, Student Activity Center, the hall was filled with 91 participants from the 2024 and 2025 student cohorts. Their presence highlighted the strong interest among new students in the relevance of social sciences for tackling contemporary challenges. This proves that the curriculum and teaching approach at ULM’s Social Science Education Department successfully captivates young minds, encouraging them to delve into how to manage diversity and build a harmonious society.
The event was opened by the Vice Dean I for Academic Affairs of FKIP ULM, Prof. Dr. Deasy Arisanty, S.Si., M.Sc. In her opening remarks, she stressed the vital role of social science graduates as agents of change. The stage was then taken over by the main speaker, Dr. Nuansa Bayu Segara, M.Pd., a prominent academic from Semarang State University. With his incisive and relevant material, Dr. Nuansa Bayu Segara sparked a profound discussion on Banjarmasin’s role as one of the top 10 cities with the best democracy index in Indonesia.
This presentation became a source of pride for the entire academic community, seemingly affirming that high-quality social science education has a tangible impact on the life of the nation. The public lecture was designed not just to transfer knowledge but to inspire students to become future leaders who are ready to face the challenges of the 21st century.
With the success of this event, the 11th-anniversary celebration is officially underway. The subsequent series of events, including cultural discussions and a national seminar, are designed to continuously hone student skills, strengthen collaboration, and demonstrate that the Social Science Education Department of FKIP ULM is a center of excellence in the development of social sciences in the Kalimantan region and throughout Indonesia.
