The Social Studies Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Lambung Mangkurat University, successfully organized a community service program themed “Training on Developing Social Studies Teaching Materials Based on Banjar Cultural Communities through the MGMP IPS Banjarbaru Partnership Program”. The activity took place on Friday, June 10, 2022, at SMP Negeri 1 Banjarbaru.
The program aimed to enhance the ability of Social Studies teachers to develop contextual teaching materials rooted in local cultural wisdom, particularly the culture of Banjar society. The participants were members of the Social Studies Teachers Working Group (MGMP IPS) of Banjarbaru City.
The event was officially opened by Ms. Andinna Mega, M.Pd., Principal of SMPN 1 Banjarbaru, and Mr. Alamsyah, a representative from the Banjarbaru City Education Office. Following the opening, participants received a technical workshop on how to design Social Studies teaching materials based on local Banjar culture. The sessions were interactive and practical, allowing participants to directly grasp the steps involved in curriculum development and classroom application.
The training was delivered by competent lecturers from the Social Studies Education Study Program, including Prof. Dr. Ersis Warmansyah Abbas, B.A., M.Pd., Dr. Syaharuddin, M.A., Rusmaniah, M.Pd., Muhammad Ridha Ilhami, M.Pd., Jumriani, M.Pd., and Muhammad Rezky Noor Handy, M.Pd.
Participants expressed high enthusiasm throughout the session. They actively discussed the challenges of textbook development and appreciated the relevance of incorporating local culture into the learning process, creating more meaningful and engaging classroom experiences.
This activity was conducted in compliance with health protocols to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The expected outcome of this program is the improvement of soft skills and local-culture-based curriculum literacy among MGMP IPS teachers. By incorporating Banjar cultural values into textbooks, teachers can foster stronger cultural identity among students and promote meaningful, context-based Social Studies learning.
