Strengthens Tourism-Based Environmental Education in the Lok Baintan River Area
The commitment of higher education institutions to supporting environmental education in riverine areas was once again demonstrated through a Community Service Program conducted by Jumriani, M.Pd, a lecturer from the Department of Social Science Education, Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM). The activity took place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in Lok Baintan Village, Banjar Regency.
Carrying the theme “Strengthening Tourism-Based Environmental Education for Students in River Area Schools of Lok Baintan Village, Banjar Regency,” the program was officially opened by the school principal. In his remarks, the principal expressed appreciation for the implementation of the program, which was considered highly relevant to the geographical and social characteristics of Lok Baintan as a river-based community and a leading tourism destination in Banjar Regency.
The activity was attended by school teachers and lecturers from the Department of Social Science Education ULM. The presence of educators from both school and university levels played a significant role in strengthening synergy between educational institutions, particularly in developing contextual learning models that reflect the characteristics of river environments and local tourism activities.
As the main speaker, Jumriani, M.Pd emphasized the importance of tourism-based environmental education as a means of fostering ecological awareness among students from an early age. She explained that river environments possess not only ecological value but also social, cultural, and economic significance, all of which can be utilized as contextual learning resources in Social Science Education.
“Through tourism-based environmental education, students are encouraged to understand the interconnection between river conservation and the sustainability of local tourism,” she stated.
The material presented covered the utilization of river tourism potential as a learning resource, strategies for integrating environmental issues into classroom instruction, and the cultivation of responsibility and awareness regarding river cleanliness and conservation. Students were also introduced to the concept of sustainable tourism, which positions the environment as a vital asset that must be collectively preserved.
The program was conducted in an interactive manner, featuring discussions between the speaker and teachers regarding the practical implementation of environmental education within the school curriculum. Teachers responded positively to the ideas presented and expressed hope that the materials could be continuously applied in daily teaching and learning activities.
Through this initiative, schools in the riverine areas of Lok Baintan Village are expected to develop learning approaches that focus not only on cognitive aspects but also on shaping students’ environmental awareness and attitudes. The program further reinforces the role of schools as educational agents in supporting the sustainability of river ecosystems and local tourism.
The community service activity concluded with a group photo session involving the speaker, teachers, and ULM lecturers as a symbol of collaboration and shared commitment to advancing sustainable environmental education in the river areas of Lok Baintan Village, Banjar Regency.
