The Village Development (Bina Desa) program was once again organized by students from the Social Science Education Department (IPS), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), aiming to foster social and environmental awareness among elementary school students. This year, SDN Semangat Dalam 1 in Barito Kuala Regency was selected as the venue. The program focused on educating students about the importance of maintaining a clean environment and the negative impact of littering.
The presence of FKIP ULM students was warmly welcomed by the school. The principal of SDN Semangat Dalam 1 expressed her appreciation and gratitude for the school being chosen to participate in the program. She hopes that this initiative will serve as a stepping stone for developing environmental awareness among students from an early age.
Waste management remains a major challenge for communities, including schools. Various efforts have been made, yet a comprehensive solution has not been achieved. Therefore, this program is expected to generate new ideas for addressing school waste issues.
The Village Development program was held on Monday, December 9, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA), under the theme “Enhancing Students’ Civic Engagement through Active Participation in the Social-Cultural Programs of Semangat Dalam Village.” This theme reflects the program’s commitment to strengthening students’ character in social and environmental life.
The implementing team consisted of 10 students from the Social Science Education Department, FKIP ULM, demonstrating a strong commitment to delivering educational activities that foster character development and social responsibility. Two students from the Information Technology Department also participated, adding an interdisciplinary dimension to the program, making it more interactive and innovative.
The primary goal of the program was to cultivate social awareness, environmental care, and active participation in community life among students from an early age, aligning with the mission of FKIP ULM’s Social Science Education Department in community service.
The activities began with participant registration, followed by the opening ceremony led by the MC and remarks from the supervising lecturer, Sigit Triyono, who emphasized the crucial role of students in making a tangible contribution to society. The principal of SD Semangat Dalam 1 then delivered her speech, expressing hope that this collaboration would serve as a model for similar future initiatives. A collective prayer was conducted before entering the main program segment.
The event also included a group photo session as both documentation and a symbol of close collaboration among students, teachers, and school staff. The core material focused on environmental education, particularly daily waste segregation. The Social Science Education students introduced the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) as practical steps for students to apply in daily life.
Through interactive presentations and Q&A sessions, students learned about the benefits of maintaining a clean environment. They were given hands-on examples of reducing waste, reusing usable items, and recycling certain materials.
The program was attended by 30 teachers, 25 students, and 8 lecturers who provided full support. FKIP ULM’s Social Science Education students hope that the knowledge shared will be applied by the students and the entire school community, creating a cleaner, healthier environment and strengthening social bonds between the school, students, and the residents of Semangat Dalam Village.
